It’s looking likely that my husband will have to be away for work for a big chunk of fall and spring. I have a book coming out in November, and am in the process of setting up tour dates and festival appearances in a few countries, in various batches. Also, we have two children to raise. On the surface, I am calm about all of this. “It’s the nature of the business,” I say, and shrug. We’ve been lucky that he hasn’t had to be away in a while. We’re lucky to work at all.
But underneath… it’s a lot. Old me would say it’s fine, and suffer through the obvious not-fine-ness of it, drowning while wondering why nobody was saving me. New me… is trying to anticipate my own needs in addition to everyone else’s. I will need to recruit a lot of support to make up for his absence. Our sitter Davis will be on standby, and I called my mother to go over a significant number of dates I’m hoping she can be out here. Like… November through January? I told her.
